Book One
Maurice and Maralyn by Sophie Elmhirst
The award-winning story of a married couple who left a life of 1970s domesticity to set sail for New Zealand. When their boat is sunk by an injured whale, they are cast adrift on the waves for 118 days. Their raft becomes a floating island surrounded above and below by all manner of wild creatures. A beautiful and gripping story of marriage and surviving in the wild.
Book Two
The Place of Tides by James Rebanks
Written by farmer and top ten best-selling author of The Shepherd's Life and English Pastoral, Book Two is a beautifully written account of Rebank's time spent on the edge of the Arctic working to save wild Eidur ducks. This is a quietly powerful exploration of the role of humans in nature, and the story of the extraordinary woman who has dedicated her life to an ancient and dying practice.
Reading Notes
Both books came with fold out Reading Notes offering more information about the authors, where to find them online, plus ideas to consider as you read. These Reading Notes are lined on the reverse so you can jot down your own notes as you go.
This quarter, we also included two quality card bookmarks made from recycled pattern designs that would other go to waste.
Magazine
Volume 12 of our exclusive 32-page subscriber magazine contained interviews with both this quarter's authors and lots of ideas and further reading on all things wild.
Gifts
There were two lovely gifts in our Summer box, both from small businesses that put sustainability at the heart of what they do.
First up, a tactile 232-page travel journal by Sukie. Pages are a mix of lined, plain and dot grid and interspersed with glassine and kraft pockets to store travel ephemera. Perfect for documenting journeys into the wild (or just on holiday!)
Digital Library
Each Drift + Focus book box was then packed by hand by us in Brighton, in planet-friendly, plastic-free packaging and topped with a personalised Welcome Note with a link to the Digital Library of playlists and podcasts.
